INTERNET-BASED MULTIDISCIPLINARY EDUCATION

Since 1998 AGI has worked in cooperation with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the University of Texas at Austin, and other universities and institutes to develop and disseminate educational training materials on the Internet.

The program is focused on the development of educational material related to petroleum exploration and development that can be used by both universities and continuing education programs. The Foundation provided support to develop the initial series of interactive learning modules which focused on petroleum reservoir characterization.

The following three techniques are being utilized in the initial educational materials:

Game-playing and Case-study Strategies

Modeling and Simulation Software

  • Heightens levels of interest and engagement of students
  • Improves context for problem applications
  • Strengthens problem-solving and team-work skills
  • Allows students to interact with problem using real geological and geophysical data
  • Allows students to construct cost/benefit analysis
  • Allows students to perform quantitative error analysis

World Wide Web

There are 15 individual modules currently available for geoscientists and engineers. These modules are game-based, self-contained studies. Subsequent training modules will focus on mineral studies, environmental assessments, and evaluations of natural hazards. Visit AAPG's Interactive Online Learning site for more information.

  • Provides ability for students to learn at times and places convenient to them
  • Allows course materials to be developed independent of client-side hardware and software
  • Allows just-in-time delivery of knowledge
  • Changes role of faculty members from lecturers and content providers to facilitators and coaches

Five new carbonate modules have been delivered during 2003 for deployment. These include:

  • Introduction to Carbonate Environments, Facies, and Facies Tracts
  • Platform-Interior Carbonate Depositional Environments
  • Platform-Margin, Slope, and Basinal Carbonate Depositional Environments
  • Carbonate Sequence Stratigraphy and Field Examples: Fundamentals of Carbonate Sequence Stratigraphy
  • Estimating Permeability in Carbonates Using the Rock-Fabric Method

Unlike the first fifteen modules, the carbonate modules are more suited to the experienced professional who is expanding their knowledge on carbonate reservoirs. These modules also represent a revision in some of the underlying technology, which will improve speed and compatibility across multiple platforms, as well as minimize firewall issues for licensing by corporations.
