GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

Since 1998, the Foundation has provided support for an
AGI-sponsored Congressional Geoscience Fellowship. The annual
fellowship provides a unique public policy learning experience
for a promising young geoscientist. The Fellows, serving as
professional staff members in Congressional offices, increase
the geoscience presence and voice on Capitol Hill. Congressional
Fellows also gain knowledge of the national science policy-making
process and the experience to become the effective policy
shapers and decision makers of tomorrow. |
Congressional Geoscience Fellows are in high demand on the Hill
due to their broad scientific training and the relevance of geoscience
knowledge to real-world issues. Because AGI represents the entire
spectrum of the geosciences, it is uniquely positioned to select
individuals with a wide variety of backgrounds and experience. The
fellowship draws on outstanding mid-career and postdoctoral geoscientists
working in industry, academia, and government who belong to one
or more of AGI’s 42 member societies.
| Benefits of the Fellowship
-
Provides an opportunity for technically accomplished
and societally aware geoscientists to make practical contributions
to the legislative process.
-
Helps build a sound scientific foundation for policies
regarding the environment, energy, and mineral resources,
natural hazards, public lands, waste disposal, and many
other issues.
-
Raises the overall level of geoscience understanding
on Capitol Hill.

In order to ensure continued future support for the Congressional
Geoscience Fellowship, AGI and the Foundation have established an
endowment fund, named in honor of Dr. William L. Fisher.
